Milton Keynes Council has a regular need for Contact Support Assistants to join the Family Advice and Support Team on a temporary basis.

As a Contact Support Assistant you will be expected to directly oversee arranged contacts between children and their parent(s).

The role of Contact Support Assistant involves preparing the room for the contact visit, accompanying the child and parent to the room and overseeing the child and parent for a specified time and recording any observations of the contact visit using a specified format.

  • Providing direct supervision and support to children and parents attending a contact support visit.
  • Providing direct advice and guidance to parents regarding the way they talk, play and care for their children during a contact visit. This will be done in conjunction with any contact agreements drawn up prior to contact sessions.
  • Recording any observations of the contact visit using a prescribed format.
  • Ensuring that any safeguarding concerns are relayed immediately to senior staff at the Family Support Centre.
  • Contributing to reports and assessments outlining the nature of the contact between the parents and children.
  • Communicating where appropriate with other carers , agencies, relatives of families and staff from other council departments as required by the service’s senior practitioner or duty senior.
  • Participating in the contact service’s overall development by attending meetings, supervision sessions and training activities as directed by the service’s senior practitioner or manager.
  • Understanding of Children’s Social Care, its legislative responsibilities, theory and methodology as it relates to the contact support assistant role.
  • Knowledge and skills of direct family support work equivalent to NVQ1/ 2.
  • Ability to listen, observe and interact in a non-threatening and supportive way.
  • Present information clearly and concisely so that it is easily understood by users and colleagues.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to understand child protection risks and risks to others and observe and report concerns in a professional way without delay
  • Must be self- motivating and able to work on own completing required tasks
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to change in busy and demanding work environment.
  • Holiday entitlement of up to 31 days per annum, pro
    rata (including bank holidays)
  • Permanent equivalent council pay rates offered after 10 weeks
